"The Emigrants" from Gaza
The play "'The Emigrants' from Gaza" is an act of resistance against the erasure of Palestinian culture in Gaza. The play is an attempt to take responsibility for this cultural erasure and to continue, preserve, and amplify it.
Our play will echo the last play performed in Gaza at Theater for Everybody (The Emigrants by Sławomir Mrożek, directed by Noam Nassar) according to the video which documents the play. The set, lights, costumes, acting and directing will be exactly according to the original play in Gaza.
Two Palestinian actors with Israeli citizenship will step into the roles of their Gazan counterparts and recreate their roles. This reenactment will be interspersed with the testimonies of one of the original Gazan actors in the play, Hossam Al-Madhoun, who recounts life under relentless bombardment until he managed to leave Gaza for Egypt six months later.
